How To Play the Game
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Creativity Dice
Creativity Dice, is a turn-based serious game the helps people develop storytelling and/or creativity skills.
How to Make Creativity Dice
- Use a Morphological Box (table) to generate options and/or attributes to be placed on the dice. There needs to be a minimum of two columns (and a maximum of six), and each column has a heading/topic/category at the top.
Do-It-Yourself Supplies
Each color die represents a story element (table column):
The core mechanic is for the player to shake and roll the colored dice, one die for each story element, and create a story from the words on each die. Then share the story with the other players. There is no scoring system to ensure players do not treat the creation of a story as a test, and to lessen the stress of being creative on demand. Rules - General Applications
Winning/Scoring There is no traditional winning or scoring with Creativity Dice. You will know if the players are "winning" if they are smiling and laughing. Players are "scoring" if they are engaged in the activity, and are successfully creating short stories with each roll of the dice. How long does it take to play? Creativity Dice can be played for a short to long time. The average length would be about 30 minutes. That gives players enough time to get familiar with the game and practice storytelling and creativity skills. |

Creative Problem Solving
Creative Problem Solving is a process that helps people find innovative solutions. It has six steps, and each step has a variety of techniques and activities associated it.
Facilitators can modify Creative Problem Solving techniques to invite innovation with Creativity Dice. Some activities that could be modified include: Morphological Box, Forced Connections, SCAMPER, and TRIZ.
Creative Problem Solving techniques can generate a variety of options and/or attributes. Once these options are placed on dice, they can be rolled to generate random connections. These random connections can spark creativity and innovation.
Another way to use the dice is to place the techniques and activities associated with a particular Creative Problem Solving step on a die. Then the die can be rolled to determine the next technique or activity to be done during a facilitated session.
How to run Creative Problem Solving sessions and the various techniques that are used covers a large topic area. For this reason, we have provided suggestions for facilitators and have not gone into a lot of detail on the subject.
- A player rolls the dice, and all the players need to create a story from the options presented.
- A player rolls the dice, and they create a story. Then each player rolls one dice, and edits the story based on the new die option.
- A player rolls the dice and creates a story. The next player rolls the dice and continues the story based on their roll.
- Use the Improv Story Spine as the foundation of creating and sharing stories.
Storytelling, User Generated Dice
- Generate dice to create and share Fables. Dice can be used for the characters and location. And the morals could be printed on business cards and chosen randomly in a pick-a-card fashion.
- Writers can create their own dice to explore a story they are thinking of writing. Or to play with options with a story they are currently writing.
